As far back as high school, Kathy was attracted to pursuits that required logic, structure and an understanding of process, three elements she found waiting when she began her career as a public accountant. “Early on at the University of Oregon, I had the chance to meet accounting professionals and pick their brains a little about the industry. It seemed like the right fit.” Though she started her professional life in the private sector, she joined Geffen Mesher in 1999, only to leave in 2006. In 2007, after a stint in the health care industry, she was back at Geffen Mesher. “It was one of those quirky timing things. I was on maternity leave, and Dave Adams called to see if I was interested in coming back during auditing season. We’d parted on good terms, and I was happy to rejoin the ranks.”
One thing Kathy always enjoyed, and came to miss upon leaving, was the variety of her work within the firm. “I work here in the office, but most of the time I’m with my clients. In that way, it’s like working with many different companies at once. Very few industries afford the same luxury. Also, you don’t get pigeonholed here. Even though I work primarily on the audit side, I’m still involved with taxation, planning and consulting, because the firm makes room for every voice.” A native Oregonian, Kathy doesn’t mind slogging through the rain during youth soccer practices—both her son and daughter play—or while running.
