When it comes to solving challenges for his clients, Matt Wright borrows an adage from the world of baseball: see the ball, hit the ball. More precisely, see the challenge and go at it—and speak straight in the process. “Clients appreciate hearing exactly what’s going on, whether it sounds good or bad. They don’t have time to beat around the bush. I’m not bothered by difficult conversations.”
At the same time, he’s built his career in part by being a receptive and understanding listener, the kind of person that clients and coworkers lean on in difficult times. Some colleagues have even referred to him as the “firm shrink.” With an analytical mind and a personable yet straightforward demeanor, Matt has followed accounting as a professional path since the early 90s. In fact, he credits his high school accounting teacher—Mr. Stern—for instilling an appreciation for his future career choice. “On our first quiz, he failed everyone who misspelled the word ‘receivables.’ That was his way of letting us know that accounting was serious business, and not a field where you could slack off.”
A lifelong Portlander, Matt enjoys much of what the area offers—from hiking and backpacking with his wife and daughter, to dinner at Andina in the Pearl. And when the weather is perfect for a day game, he pines a little for baseball to return to downtown Portland.
